Book Tour: Lady In Deed by Ann Montclair Giveaway

Lady in Deed

by Ann Montclair

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Piety or passion… What’s a lady to do?
Lady Mary Rutherford believed she would live her entire life as a nun. But  when King Henry VIII’s reformist movement makes practicing religion a  dangerous proposition, Mary is forced to begin a new life with a family  she doesn't know. Worse, she must become lady of the manor, a role for which she feels sorely unprepared.
After a decade of service to his king, Lord Trenton Stanley returns home  to find his estate in ruins, his fortune depleted, and his doddering  father drooling over Mary—a woman Trent fears has been installed to  replace his mother. Trent strives to rebuild his life, but his desire for Mary becomes a serious distraction he can’t seem to ignore.
Though Mary is anxious to prove she’s a worthy lady, she’s tempted by the rakish Trent into deeds most unladylike…
EXCERPT:
“I have stopped, you see,” he said, lifting his hands above his head in mock surrender. “I mean you no harm, my dear, nor do I intend to rush our exploits, but you are quite the beauty. You have amazing lips and your breasts — ”
She gasped. “I am outraged, my lord. Why do you speak to me roughly? I am not the type of woman who welcomes bawdiness. I’ve never heard such words or felt such…terror!”
“Terror?” He laughed. “You kiss well when frightened.” He arched a brow.
“Seems to me, you wanted me under your petticoats. I apologize for my roughness, dearie, but you brought it out in me. It’s been a long time since a morsel like you presented itself to be sampled. And you do taste good. The finest mead honeys your breath. That tells me you demand a high price for your
comely charms. Go ahead. Tell me what you want, besides my money and my cock, of course.”
At that, the woman smacked his face with unexpected strength. The blow sent Trent back into the seat from which he leaned. If she wanted to play her wanton games with fire, he was the man for the challenge.
Trent leaped upon her and pinned her to the seat. The woman struggled to sit up and shaped her petite hands into claws. “Unhand me. I am your ward not your whore!”
He recoiled, and she scurried across the seat and laid a quavering hand to her throat. He pointed his finger at her. “You? My ward? Impossible, woman. I have nonesuch.”
Tears swam into her eyes, and Trent’s heart skipped. My God, she is utterly enchanting. The glaze of passion that turned her blue eyes almost lavender lifted. She swiped at her eyes and affected a stonier expression.
“No apology?” she asked. “No words of welcome? No lord are you.”
Now it was her turn to point, and she poked little jabs as if he were an insect she meant to squash with her finger. “You are a cur. A beast that should be tied in a field. You could not be the honourable lord my parents named benefactor before they passed into heaven. Sweet Jesu’, you are Lord Stanley?”
He nodded with a snap of his head.
Trenton was surprised at how her accusations stung his heart like poisoned arrows. He wanted to reach out and touch her soft yellow hair, move it from her proud shoulders, and hold her closely. Her outrage evoked a strange tenderness in Trent, but also bitterness. Who was this chit, and why did she act like
he’d done her harm? They rode in his coach with his driver, and she was, what, a guest, a ward? An unwelcome one if she kept glaring with those icy eyes. Trent couldn’t help it. He actually found her unbelievably attractive, even if her gaze promised no reward.
“And you are my ward? How so? Do tell, my ‘lady.’” He exaggerated the last to reinforce he doubted her assertion. His lifted brow named her a liar.
Book Tour: Seal Of Destiny by Traci Douglass
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy
Publisher: Crimson Romance
Number of pages: 263
Word Count: 70,000
Book Description:
Love conquers all… but can it stop the Apocalypse?
Mira Herald is having the worst life ever.  Not only is she plagued by horrific nightmares starring the Devil himself, she’s now the target of a power-hungry, rogue minion, freshly sprung from Hell and bent on her destruction.  To complicate matters further, she’s acquired a stalker. One who insists he’s a divine warrior sent for her protection because she houses an ancient relic with the power to unleash Armageddon. Last time Mira checked, she wasn’t insane. Still, all this celestial mayhem is enough to drive a girl crazy.
Kagan is a member of the Scion, an elite team of immortal warriors selected by Divinity to aid mankind and save the world. After a century alone, Kagan is summoned for a new mission. He’s eager to begin. Eager until he’s informed his mission consists of protecting a woman with no clue to the power she wields. Plus, his briefing fails to prepare him for his new target’s cosmic-sized attitude problem.  As Divinity’s sworn servant, he’s required to fulfill his duty. His oath, however, does not require him to be enthusiastic about his new assignment or warm-and-fuzzy toward his new compatriot. He plans a wham-bam rescue and a quick return to solitude.
The rogue minion attacks—with the backing of a mysterious organization—and all Hades erupts, putting a fast end to any whirlwind escapes. Accustomed to staunch independence, Mira’s survival now requires full cooperation and an unwavering belief in Kagan. The battle-hardened warrior is also forced to chose: between duty and desire. Amidst the turmoil, Kagan and Mira’s undeniable passion draws them closer to each other and down a path neither expected but both yearn for, more than they ever knew.
Will love save the day? The world’s fate depends on the answer.
 Excerpt:
 “Basta!” Kagan grabbed her by the arm and twisted slightly, not enough to hurt, but enough to let her know he meant business as he directed her to a corner booth. He ignored the half-full beverages and coats scattered on the seats and shoved Mira into the confined space. When the booth’s original owners took issue with his hostile takeover, Kagan dispatched them with a lethal glare. He wasn’t sure where the girl had gotten the idea his mind was damaged, but he was damn sure he didn’t like it. He moved in behind her to block her escape.
“Oh, hell, no!” After several unsuccessful strikes to his muscled physique, Mira tried to slide out beneath the table. The angle proved too awkward. Defeated, she shoved as far away as she could into the corner and propped those killer boots on the seat in front of her in warning. “You better let me out of here, asshole, before I call the cops! I caught you stalking me, pervert!”
Kagan took a deep breath. He never lost his cool in battle, and he wasn’t about to start now. “Pervert? You’re of age, si?”
Mira glared. Kagan ticked through their earlier interactions, searching for a reason behind her intense hostility. His preternatural instincts sensed her intention before her hand reached his carotid. He blocked her quickly, locking her small hand within his and forcing it to the table beneath his own. Her pulse raced against his palm. He took another swig of beer then flashed his most endearing grin. “Let’s start over.” He released his bottle and extended his hand. “I’m Kagan.”
She refused to acquiesce. Kagan spoke in quiet tones meant to calm, to reassure. “I know I’m a stranger, but we have things to discuss.” He glanced around the crowded club, at the bodies packed tight. “We can’t do it here, though—no privacy. My apartment is close. Why don’t we go there and talk?”
Mira kicked him hard in the thigh.
“Merda!” Kagan grabbed his throbbing leg. “What’s in those damn boots? Marble?”
“Let me out of here, jackass, before I sideline your baby-maker!” Mira struggled within the tight confines of the booth. As she squirmed, the spicy scent of her shampoo wafted, and he was overcome with the strangest urge to plunge his hands into the riotous mass of her hair, to feel it curl around his fingers. She tugged on the hand pinned beneath his, and his thumb traced over her thudding veins. His heart pounding along with hers. The odd tingle sped through his torso, and his mouth turned to cotton. Her gaze blazed up at him, a swirling mix of green and golden brown. He noted the dark smudges below and wondered what kept her from slumber.
Dolce Cristo! Kagan looked away, fought for control. This was getting way out of hand. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d bedded a woman, but apparently it had been far too long.
ABSOLUTION:
Release date: October 9, 2012
Publisher: Montlake Romance
Book Description:
With the vampire world on the brink of civil war over the scarcity of untainted human blood, battle lines are being drawn between the once peaceful vampire and human enclave of Penton, Alabama, and the powerful Vampire Tribunal.
A Scottish gallowglass warrior turned vampire in the early 17th century, Mirren Kincaid once served the Tribunal as its most creative and ruthless executioner—a time when he was known as the Slayer. But when assigned a killing he found questionable, Mirren abandoned the Tribunal’s political machinations and disappeared—only to resurface two centuries later as the protector and second-in-command of Penton. Now the Tribunal wants him back on their side—or dead.
To break their rogue agent, they capture Glory Cummings, the descendant of a shaman, and send her to restore Mirren’s bloodthirsty nature. But instead of a monster, Glory sees a man burdened by the weight of his past. Could her magic touch—meant by the tribunal to bring out a violent killer—actually help Mirren break his bonds and discover the love he doesn’t believe he deserves?
It’s a town under siege, a powerful warrior in a battle with his past, and one woman who can make the earth move—literally—as the Penton Legacy continues.
REDEMPTION:
Following a worldwide pandemic whose vaccine left human blood deadly to vampires, the vampire community is on the verge of starvation and panic. Some have fanned into rural areas, where the vaccine was less prevalent, and are taking unsuspecting humans as blood slaves. Others are simply starving, which for a vampire is worse than death—a raging hunger in a creature too weak to feed.
Immune to these struggles—at first—is Penton, a tiny community in rural Chambers County, Alabama, an abandoned cotton mill town that has been repopulated by charismatic vampire Aidan Murphy, his scathe of 50 vampires, and their willingly bonded humans. Aidan has recruited his people carefully, believing in a peaceful community where the humans are respected and the vampires retain a bit of their humanity.
But an unresolved family feud and the paranoia of the Vampire Tribunal descend on Penton in the form of Aidan’s brother, Owen Murphy. Owen has been issued a death warrant that can only be commuted if he destroys Penton—and Aidan, against whom he’s held a grudge since both were turned vampire in 17th-century Ireland.  Owen begins a systematic attack on the town, first killing its doctor, then attacking one of Aidan’s own human familiars
To protect his people, Aidan is forced to go against his principles and kidnap an unvaccinated human doctor—and finds himself falling in love for the first time since the death of his wife in Ireland centuries ago.
Dr. Krystal Harris, forced into a world she never knew existed, must face up to her own abusive past to learn if the feelings she’s developing for her kidnapper are real—or just a warped, supernatural kind of Stockholm Syndrome in which she’s allowing herself to become a victim yet again.
Susannah Sandlin’s REDEMPTION is the first in the Penton Legacy series. Book two, ABSOLUTION, will be out September 18, and book three, OMEGA, on December 18.
Interview:
  1. Where did you get the idea for the novel?
I had been reading a lot of dystopian and post-apocalyptic fiction and had come up with an idea for a paranormal romance series with vampires, so I decided to turn things on its head a bit. The vampires are having a post-apocalyptic crisis (a human virus pandemic has changed human blood chemistry enough to make it poisonous to vamps), while the humans are going on with life as usual. The humans are killing off the vampires without even knowing the vampires exist. Only the vampires aren’t quite ready to become extinct. (But it is a romance—really!)
  1.  Your title. Who came up with it? Did you ever change your title?
I’ve titled all my books (so far). With this Penton Legacy series I wanted one-word titles using powerful words that summed up the theme of the book. So in Redemption, that is what the hero, Aidan, is seeking. In the second book, Mirren is looking for Absolution. And in the new book, Will has to make the last stand for his people from their shelter of last resort—Omega.
  1. Which came first, the title or the novel?
I usually come up with the titles first, or as I’m outlining. Surprisingly, so far at least, I haven’t changed any titles.
  1. Since becoming a writer, what’s the most exciting thing to ever happen to you?
The first time I walked into a bookstore and saw my first book on the shelf. Actually, that’s still pretty exciting! Someone sent me a photo yesterday of one of my books in the “Best Bets” display at her local library, and that was just too cool. But a close second was when my agent called me and said she’d received an author on that first series.
  1. What book are you currently reading or what was the last book you read?
I recently finished Kim Harrison’s newest Hollows novel, Ever After. It’s one of my favorite series. I’m on a tight deadline for my next project, so I’m not reading anything currently.
  1. What was your first book that you ever wrote (very first one you wrote, not published)?
Actually, I’m very blessed to have found an agent and publisher for my first-ever book. It’s called Royal Street, and is written under the name Suzanne Johnson. It’s the first in an urban fantasy series set in New Orleans around the time of Hurricane Katrina (where I was living at the time), and is published by Tor Books.
  1. What is your writing process?
I’m a plotter. Before I start writing, I need to have my overarching plot idea, my worldbuilding basics (i.e., in this series, what can my vampires do and what can they not do?), and my hero and heroine’s characters and motivations and flaws and quirks. My outlines usually run up to 10,000 words in length. I don’t know everything that’s going to happen—I like to leave enough hanging so my characters can still surprise me. But I have a full-time day job and a full-time writing career so I can’t afford the time it takes to be a “pantser.”
  1. Who are your favorite authors of all time?
Stephen King—I grew up on his books, and I still read about everything he writes. He’s great at character development and suspense. I also grew up reading these massive, multi-generational books by Susan Howatch and James Michener, and pop history stuff by John Jakes. It’s a wonder I’m not more warped than I am!
  1. At a book signing, do you just sign your name or do you write a note? How do you come up with stuff to say?
I try to write something besides my name—it’s usually something short that plays on the topic of the book unless I know the person I’m signing for. I’ve seen authors who are able to doodle or draw little illustrations when they sign, but I’m not that talented!
  1. What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I can’t swim. I have this mental block about, oh, I don’t know, drowning. I gave this trait to the heroine of my urban fantasy series, so people might not be that surprised, now that I think about it.
  1. How do you react to a bad review?
I used to get hurt by them, and would let one ruin my whole week. Some of them still sting, but after a while you develop a tougher skin. People have a right to their opinion; sometimes I wish they’d express their opinion without being mean or spiteful, but that’s out of my control. I’m not one of those people who never reads her reviews—if enough people say the same thing I pay attention to it. But I don’t pore over reviews the way I used to.
  1. How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
I went home and fed my dogs—LOL. The celebration came on the release of the first book, when some awesome friends from around the country all came together in New Orleans for the launch. We all went to dinner at Commander’s Palace and drank champagne. One of the truly wonderful moments of my life.
Thanks for having me here today, Alisia!
Excerpt:
The stars twinkled above them as they raced through the castle. They were not permitted to stay long, only until their task was complete.
On earth everything was tangible and unique, but back home the realm was an endless white void where everyone existed in unison. They both loved their home, but once the magnificence of this world had been experienced, it was hard to go back.
Over the years they’d been sent on many missions, and it saddened him as he knew this would be their last. Coming to earth was the only way he could spend time with her, because back in their world falling in love was forbidden.
The sound of her giggle as she ran ahead brought a smile to his face. It was like a beautiful melodic bell chiming inside his head. He followed close behind, taking note of the way her dark hair flicked out behind her and caressed the nape of her neck. He imprinted in his memory every line and every curve of her body; because after that night he wasn’t sure if he’d ever see her again. She turned to glance over her shoulder and he caught a glimpse of her radiant face, her sparkling blue sapphire eyes and perfect porcelain skin. She was beautiful, and heavenly, and he loved her.
Keeping his feelings from her was the hardest thing he’d ever had to do, but making the decision to leave was harder still. She couldn’t know his intentions as he knew she’d want to go with him. He wouldn’t allow it; he couldn’t let her make that sacrifice. They were best friends and he was closer to her than any angel he’d known. Where he was going there was no turning back and she didn’t deserve that life. It would be better to live without her than to stay and live with her just beyond reach. He couldn’t do it anymore. He couldn’t risk her existence to satisfy his own, and he couldn’t let himself love her.
She grabbed his hand and pulled him into a small stone alcove. Her touch was warm and spread happiness through him, consuming him like a burning fire. Touching her always made him feel like he was home.
“We have to go back now,” she whispered.
He knew it was true, but he didn’t want to leave. Not yet. This would be the last time he saw her this way, possibly the last time he would see her at all, and he wanted the moment to stretch on forever.
“Just a few more minutes,” he said. “I’m sure they won’t mind.”
“They see everything, we should be back already.”
She was right, she was always right. For a moment they stood gazing into each other’s eyes, and he wanted what he couldn’t have, wanted it so much it hurt. He almost told her there and then exactly how he felt, but instead he hardened his heart.
“Fly with me first?” he asked.
She hesitated, then smiled and nodded.
He slid his hands around her waist and she rested her head on his chest. He closed his eyes and sent his orbs of light around them. The tiny glowing spheres swirled until they joined together as one and they left earth, bound for the outer realm. There they could fly freely, without the risk of being seen. He thought it was the most amazing feeling in the world.
They flew side by side, twisting and turning in unison, so in tune with each other no words were needed. He knew exactly what she would do before she did it. A gentle breeze made by the flutter of her wings caressed his arm and sent a shiver through him. She was magnificent, and even more so with wings spread wide. Beautiful and silvery white, she shimmered in the night sky and it took all his strength not to reach out and touch her. He longed to feel the silky smoothness of her feathers beneath his fingertips, to hold her, and it broke his heart knowing that when she arrived home he would not be with her.
They danced and twirled. Her giggle floated among the stars which twinkled brighter as she neared. He wished they could stay like that for eternity, happy and free, but he’d made his decision and the time had come to let her go.
He knew they should have been back already, so he reached for her and took her into his arms. For a moment he savoured her touch, drew in the fresh scent of her hair which smelt like summer rain, and made sure he’d remember the way her body seemed to fit perfectly with his.
Together for the last time, she lifted her head and he looked deep into her eyes. She pulled back and he could tell she was about to ask what was wrong, she always knew when something wasn’t quite right. Struggling to hold it in, struggling to hide his emotion, he lost the battle and a tear trickled down his cheek. She reached up and caught it in the palm of her hand where it sat glistening, then solidified into a diamond. Before she could speak, he said the words he’d been waiting a long time to say.
“I renounce you and all your ways.”
The expression she held was one that would haunt him for the rest of his life, and he hated that he made her look that way. She shook her head and tried to grab for him, but he was already slipping away. He had no way of telling what was in store for him, or what his fall would be like. Her angelic face was fading into the distance, she was becoming a blur at the end of a long black tunnel, and he could see her calling his name but he couldn’t hear her. Before long she was a distant memory, and he was surrounded by a cold, heavy blanket of darkness.
