Creating the main character:

How did I create Kyla James?

I have read a few romance novels with a common theme…powerful, worldly, handsome man seduces beautiful, sweet, naive virgin.  Or the other option, a sweet naive boy seduced and transformed by a beautiful, sexy, older woman.  Two great plots. Neither were the story I wanted to tell.

I wanted to tell a story about a hot, sexy, virile man who chose to be celibate being pursued by a hot and sexy woman.  I thought the mix of two strong wills would be amazing.  Here you have this man that has a very strong sex drive, who gives it all up because he’s in love with God.  His decision didn’t make him immune to the urges and temptations of women, he just had to learned how to control himself and stay true his commitment.

That is until he meets Kyla James.  Kyla is the ultimate vixen.  She’s what most men desire.  She has a body designed for every imaginable pleasure.  It’s her physical appearance that grabs Sean’s attention.  He has a definite type…average height, curvy, brown skinned, shoulder length hair loaded with a little drama.  That’s Kyla.

While she’s physically attractive, she has a lot of flaws.  There are two primary reasons she likes married men.  One, is because she’s scared of commitment.  The other is because she likes to be in control. 

I gave her a lot of self-esteem and confidence, but I made sure not to let her cross the line to being conceited.  As she grows through the story, you really see her naiveté and vulnerability.  Those the things that Sean saw when he saw her.  However, it was her beauty and self-confidence that kept him from asking her out sooner.  Once he got up his nerve and broke through her walls, he saw what no one else could, that she was just as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside.  That’s when the problems occurred. 

Her toughness and thing for married men was her safety net.  But when she grew, she softened and learned how to love. 

Kyla is the friend that will have your back and fight for you.  To Corianne, she’s the cool older sister that’s seen and done it all and tells you not to do what she did.  She’s also a parents worst nightmare and pride and joy.

Anyone involved with Kyla, is never board.  For all of her sassiness, confidence, intelligence, success, talent and beauty, she’s still a teenage girl longing for some the cutest boy in the room to notice her.

Is she a real person?  She’s a composite of real and fictional people.

EXCERPT:

“What do I do about Sean?”

“What about him?” Mike asked.

“I think I’ve fallen in love with him.”

“Okay, I know this is a female thing.” He started to leave.

“Honey, sit down.” DeeDee patted his leg.

“You know I’m no good with the dating stuff,” he pleaded with DeeDee.

“I know, but you’re his friend.”

He took a deep breath. “He’s a great guy, but you already know that. And you probably know how much Francesca hurt him. Has he given you any reason to think he may feel the same?”

“Kyla, forgive my husband. Honey, you’re right, I’ll handle this. Go check on Michelle.”

“Thank you.” He stood up, “Kyla, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Thank you Mike or is it Pastor?”

“It’s still Mike. We’re friends, remember.” He smiled and walked down the hall.

“Okay, tell me everything,” DeeDee urged.

“I can’t get him out of my head. He told me he was going on a blind date and I got upset. And after I told him I broke up with my boyfriend and how hurt I was, he came over with ice cream. Well, gelato. It’s one of the things we like to do, eat gelato. We meet twice a week for coffee and lunch, and occasionally we go to dinner or brunch. And when I’m not feeling well, he comes over with groceries and rubs my feet and takes care of me and Winnie. Then he drove me to my parents and stayed with us the weekend. He said I needed to be around my family. He and my mother have become friends.” She chuckled. “I think they’ve been conspiring to get me to change.”

“I think it’s pretty safe to say, he feels the same way.”
