With the escape of an old foe, Mia is too late to reveal to her daughter
the truth before Judith can exact her revenge in a wash of blood and death.

The Power of Scent
Author Dawn Kirby
describes how she created Leah’s power of scent where she can tell someone’s
personality by how the person smells.
Leah’s sense of smell started with
this: me wishing I could sense the true personalities of the people I meet. Not
that I would rule out befriending them based on a questionable scent, but at
least I wouldn’t be shocked when they did something I might find unacceptable
or even worse hurt me or someone else. It would allow us to keep those we find
fake or unsavory at arms length, never allowing them close enough to hurt or
take advantage of us. Our energy would be better spent surrounding ourselves
with wonderful, “real” people that only enrich our lives.
An ability like that in Leah’s world
is without a doubt impossible to live without. As a dhampir she’s exceptionally
strong, but still no match for the physical strength of the creatures she comes
into contact with on a daily basis. As hunted and as coveted as she is, a nose
like hers gives her an edge that allows her time to think.
The idea for such an uncanny sense first
came to me while I was working in a candle store several years ago. There are
so many scents in a place like that it was hard not to start associating each
one with a certain emotion. They trigger thoughts, actions without us even
realizing it. After a while I started noticing people with one type of
personality trait or another would seek out certain scents.
For
example:
Happy-Go-Lucky
people almost always look for something containing mint or vanilla.
Energetic
people seemed to favor the citric as well as the cinnamon.
Laid back
people never failed to find the shelves displaying lavender, chamomile and
lilac.
A strong
sexual personality would find nothing more enticing than black currant or
sandalwood.
The more I watched, the more I
started to match the scents up to our regular customers. Whether they smelled
like the candles or oils they favored or not, it became their defining scent .
. . to me anyway.
When I started to write SECRETS, I
thought back to those days. I remembered all the scents I’d assigned to certain
people and used them to help create the characters. My good guys were
difficult. There was such a wide variety I could pick from. My iffy ones were a
little easier to place. The bad people were probably the easiest. I just
thought of one bad smell or another and tried to associate it with a mood and
eventually with a specific character type.
Letting her see colors was cool, but
actually gifting her with the one trait I wish I could possess was like
watching a dream finally come true.
