Grabbing onto the edge of the pool he began to haul himself up. I watched his shoulders bunch, forearms tighten, and finally his biceps and the muscles that wrapped around from the backs of his arms came into sharp relief as his chest rose out of the water. It streamed down, following the force of gravity, but seeming to take the most luxurious ride down his form, before returning to the big empty pool.

I backed up giving Lenox space as his leg came up and he hopped into a standing position, drops of water shaking off him. I felt them on my face and bare arms. He didn't reach for a towel, just stood in front of me, the soft drizzle joining with other lingering streams of water slipping down his body. "I'm looking forward to working with you," he said. His gold chain rested against his neck again, short enough that it barely brushed his collarbone, but long enough that when he was on top of me it could fall against his lips.

I cleared my throat. "Me too," I said. Lenox smiled at me and I realized what all his clients were really paying for: the acknowledgement and admiration he showered so generously on you. Beyond companionship and pleasure lies the deep need to be accepted.

"Do you mind if I get you wet?" he asked.

I laughed. "What a rude question."

"Yes, well," he said in that delicious voice of his, as he closed the distance between us. "I can be a very rude boy."

From DEATH IN THE DARK (A Sydney Rye Novel, #2)

I woke up with my hands over my head, the joints at my shoulder aching. It was hot in the small space and I tried to scratch an itch on my nose but couldn’t move my arm. I blinked my eyes open.

There was a man sitting on the end of my bed. Instantly I was awake and nauseous with fear. I yanked at my arms but instead of moving them down to me, I moved myself up to them. Sitting on the bed, my feet underneath me I could see that my hands were tied and stuck to the headboard with what looked like a giant nail. My ankles were bound with a thick rope that itched once I saw its rough fibers rubbing my skin red.

The man was small in stature, thin, with black hair that curled in tight ringlets almost to his waist. His skin was tan and his eyes deep brown. His eye lashes curled up, long and thick, like a cows. He watched me without comment.

“Who are you?” I asked, my voice rough.

He smiled, a wide grin that showed off big teeth with even, thick spaces between them. “I’m Merl.”

“What are you doing in my bed?”

He reached out a hand and that’s when I saw the dogs. There were three Doberman pinchers patiently panting. Two on his left and one on his right. Blue sat next to the last, his pant in sync with theirs. Merl reached into his belt and pulled out a knife.

I breathed deeply, trying to slow my heart which was in the process of filling me with so much adrenaline that my teeth began to chatter uncontrollably. I clenched my jaw to shut them up and felt my stomach threatening to empty.

“Cat got your tongue?” Merl asked and then laughed, showing off his wide-set teeth again. The knife glinted in his hand. Merl reached toward me with the knife. When his head was close enough, I reared back mine and tried to slam it into his skull. But Merl was much too quick for me and I threw myself through the air, flipping off the bed.

Getting my bound feet underneath me I faced him, my teeth grinding and my heart about to explode.

INTERVIEW:

Do you ever wish you were someone else? Who?

I rarely wish to be someone else but if I could be anyone I’d probably take Heidi Klum or P.D James. Can I look like Heidi Klum and write like P.D James?

What did you do on your last birthday?

I hit #84 on the Amazon best seller list! It was the best birthday ever. 

Do you have any tattoos?  Where? When did you get it/them? Where are they on your body?

No, I’ve thought about it a lot but just can’t commit to anything. My latest idea was to get matching ones with my husband on our ring fingers since we don’t have wedding rings (not on purpose, he lost his in the ocean and mine was an antique and snapped one day). But he thought that was a terrible idea so back to the drawing board.

What are you working on right now?

I just finished up the fourth novel in my Sydney Rye Series, STRINGS OF GLASS. It takes place in India where Sydney Rye has gone to relax and live a quiet life reading paperbacks and drinking beer. However, after a pack of wild dogs attacks her dog, Blue, and together they defeat them, Sydney starts to feel that old itch again; to do good by being bad. Soon trouble finds her when Sydney stops an attempted rape. The victim's story pulls Sydney into a quest that takes her across India, battling against corrupt officials and cultural mores, to save children in grave danger. 

I wrote it over the course of seven months, two of which I spent in India… reading paperbacks and drinking beers. Luckily, trouble did not find me :)

Soon I’ll throw myself into Sydney Rye #5  which takes place in Miami and brings back a beloved character from the first book.

Around the next bend a chicken was in the road. Jimmy saw it and swerved into a rut to avoid it. It was a wild, out-of-control move and I grabbed at the door trying to steady myself. The Jeep jerked down and then up again as Jimmy powered us out of the ditch and back onto the road. "What the fuck!" I yelled.

"There was a chicken."

"Next time fucking hit the chicken!"

That's exactly what the guy in the black Jeep did. I turned around to see the feathers exploding with a mix of blood and guts against the guy's grill. He drove through the chicken into the shade of a tree and I saw him. I saw Blane. He was wearing wrap-around sunglasses - the kind douche bags think look cool. His mouth was a straight line, his face made of stone.

I rested my new gun on the shoulder of my seat and tried to steady my aim as we raced back past the Home Depot. Jimmy swerved around other cars, at times facing oncoming traffic, to further our escape. It was impossible to get a clear shot. I turned back around as we crested a hill and we could see the town below us.

Traffic became congested as we got closer to town. I turned around and saw that Blane was stuck several cars behind us. There was no way he could fire off any rounds with all these people around. We stopped at a red light and I waved to Blane. He raised a gun and I dropped down in my seat as I heard a window shatter. It wasn't our car but the one right behind us.
