Book Description:
Portals. Doorways. Gateways. All ways to get in or out of someplace, right?
Nothing weird, spooky or otherworldly about them. Or, at least that’s what Tallis Challinor always thought. Tallis is a practical young woman, a writer, a lover of words and a natural storyteller. But she’s not sure what to do when real-life sucks her into a story far stranger than anything she’s ever imagined.

Tallis discovers that portals are passageways between the human and spirit worlds. She finds out that bent-on-evil ghosts can escape from the spirit realm through those gateways whether they are supposed to or not. And when they do, Tallis finds herself the chosen human, picked by the portal in her basement in New Hampshire, to seek out and return the wayward spirits.

All Tallis wants to do is recover from the loss of her parents and settle into her new home. She’d like a boyfriend, someone like the cute guy, Aiden, down the street. She’d like some girlfriends to talk to and maybe even go shopping with. And she’d like the ghosts, the portal, and the responsibility that has been thrust upon her to disappear.

But when the ghosts threaten her new hometown, her friends, and the family she holds so dear, Tallis discovers the inner courage to meet the portal’s challenge and save those most precious to her. Along the way, Tallis learns that she is more than she’s ever imagined herself to be and that she deserves more than she’s ever dreamed possible.

Book Description:
Brittany, France. Near the coast. A picturesque inn. Spectacular scenery. Tasty French treats. Time off from school.

Tallis Challinor imagines this as the perfect vacation scenario, so when her grandfather suggests that she accompany him to the country of her ancestors, she is more than happy to tag along. What Tallis doesn’t bargain on is another ghostly encounter, especially not so soon after she’s sealed up a bunch of unruly ghosts on their side of the portal between the human and spirit realms. But, when she feels the energy radiating from the megalithic standing stones dotting the countryside around Carnac, France, an energy that feels frighteningly like the power exuding from the portal in her basement back home, she has a feeling she might be in trouble.  And she is right.

When her grandfather goes missing, Tallis leaps into action. She calls the only ghostbuster she knows in France and, with help on the way, she gears up to battle another set of spirits bent on causing destruction. Along the way, Tallis is forced to examine her life, her relationships, and her tightly-held beliefs about who she is and where she comes from.  She also has to juggle two impossible males, both attractive but annoying, both seemingly set on driving her nuts or breaking her heart.

Interview:
1.     Where did you get the idea for the novel?
The idea for The Portal’s Choice came to me on a late afternoon in June. I was driving home, approaching an old house that I had driven past several times before. But this time, something about the house and the cemetery next to it sparked my imagination. I felt that there had to be something that happened between the basement of that house and the adjacent graveyard. The feeling wouldn’t go away and when I arrived home I told my kids and my husband that I thought I had a story and what had inspired it. We brainstormed ideas until I knew that I had a young adult novel with a female protagonist. The rest of the story filtered in over the next several weeks as I jotted down notes whenever I had a new thought.

2.     Your title. Who came up with it? Did you ever change your title?
The working title for my book was Tallis Challinor, Ghostbuster. The working title gave me an anchor and a way to organize my chapters. In fact, I had names for all of the chapters as well. The chapter names reminded me of what was in each section of the book. Later, my friend and mentor, Katherine Mariaca-Sullivan, suggested that I needed a better name for the book. My family and I had a lively discussion at dinner one evening and one of my kids hit on the idea of using the word “portal” in the title. Since the portal in the book does indeed choose Tallis, the protagonist, as a gatekeeper, The Portal’s Choice became the logical title for the book.

3.     Which came first, the title or the novel?
I sort of gave this one away with my answer to the previous question so you know that the book came before the name.

4.     Since becoming a writer, what’s the most exciting thing to ever happen to you?
Every time I hear from a reader, whether through e-mail, personal conversation, or in a review, about how much they loved reading The Portal’s Choice, I am so excited and happy. I write because when I am not in that creative place I am not complete and knowing that other people enjoy the stories I’ve created is a thrill and an honor. Each and every review from a happy reader is the most exciting thing to happen to me.

5.     What book are you currently reading or what was the last book you read?
I’m reading Sue Grafton’s newest novel, W is for Wasted. I’ve read all of her books. They are some of my favorites.

6.     What was your first book that you ever wrote (very first one you wrote, not published)?
I have two books, both untitled, that I have started but not finished. The first one I started in 2003 but then my family moved in 2004 and I never finished it. The other is set in India and I do plan on finishing that one, hopefully later in 2014.

7.     What is your writing process?
I wish I had a really good answer for this question. My writing process is something I struggle with daily and I guess if I have a New Year’s resolution it is to improve my process. Currently, I write in the afternoon. I’d prefer to write in the morning and slowly I’m making that shift. It’s all about prioritizing my time.

  1. Who are your favorite authors of all time?
I mentioned Sue Grafton in answer 5 and she is one of my favorite authors. I have always loved Agatha Christie books and the complex mysteries she weaves.  Two more favorite authors are P.D. James and Elizabeth George. And sometimes only a book by Jane Austen will do. I also enjoy reading young adult authors and have discovered the wonders of the worlds created by J.K. Rowling, Rick Riordan, Brandon Mull, and Michael Scott through my kids. Some of my best memories are of reading The Harry Potter series to my children when they were younger.

9.     At a book signing, do you just sign your name or do you write a note? How do you come up with stuff to say?
This is a tough one and I finally decided to sign books with “Happy Reading” and my name.

  1. What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I am a yoga instructor and I received my first certification from my yoga master in Bangalore, India.

11.  How do you react to a bad review?
I am human and a bad review makes me unhappy. But I try to limit the amount of time I spend feeling bad about a situation that I can’t control. I remind myself that I can’t please everyone and I am thankful for the readers who enjoy my work.

12.  How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
The first sale of The Portal’s Choice was on the day it was released. I celebrated the release of the book and the first sale by having lunch with the women in my writing group. It was the perfect way to commemorate both events.

Book Tour: Dangerously Hers by A. M. Griffin Interview & Giveaway

BLURB:
Loving Dangerously, Book Three Jess hates aliens. After the invasion that destroyed Earth, the extraterrestrial bastards sold her to a brothel as a sex slave. She may have escaped but the old memories and fears still linger in the dark corners of her mind. Supposedly Sonis is just the place for her—somewhere safe, where she can heal and start fresh. She’s almost hopeful…until she meets Rasha, her new boss.

Rasha, Captain of the Sonis Royal Guard, is a warrior through and through. He’s huge, sinfully sexy and could have any woman on Sonis—but the woman he wants is Jess. He’s very much an alien and Jess knows she should hate him or at least be wary, but whenever he’s around, she loses control. She tells herself it’s only sex—amazing, mind-blowing sex like nothing else she’s ever experienced—but there’s something about Rasha that shakes her soul. The feel of his skin against hers, the look in his eyes as he touches her—they make her want to believe it’s possible to find love and begin again.

A Romantica® science fiction erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

EXCERPT:
He inhaled sharply. “I can smell you.” Then he let his gaze drop to crotch.

Her hands instinctively dropped to shield herself.

She gasped as he dropped to his knees. “What are you doing?”

He wrapped his arms around her and cradled her ass. Her mouth dropped open as he nuzzled his nose between her thighs. “I can take care of this…you.”

She dug her nails into his shoulder blades. Should she push him away or keep him where he was?

He made a sound so animalistic. So hot and sexy that it made her pussy respond in ways she didn’t want it to.

“That’s it.” He sniffed into her.

His fingers worked in unison to massage her ass, all the while pulling her onto his face. She tried to stand her ground even when she rocked to her toes.

He looked up to her with eyes smoldering with heat. “Can I do it Jess?”

She blinked, trying to remember his question. “Do…do what?”

“Lick you until you until you come.”

Oh God.

Her knees buckled.

“I want to taste you. I want to bury my face in your pussy. I want to…to…” Growling, he bit her.

INTERVIEW:
  1. Where did you get the idea for the novel?
I had already written Dangerously Mine and Dangerously Yours. I had intended to write about JB (one of the characters from Dangerously Yours). JB was going to drop Jess, one of his best friends off at Sonis to start her new life. But from the first line, Jess’ character had taken over. I tried for a month to regain JB’s perspective, but Jess being strong willed wouldn’t allow it. Finally I gave in, intending to write a novella, but my hopes of a 15k book turned into a 25k then upwards to 45k until I finally ended it in the 50k range. Jess had a lot more to say than I had originally planned for her to. In the end I was glad that I had told her story.
  1. Your title. Who came up with it? Did you ever change your title?
I wanted to keep with the series theme of Dangerously (Dangerously Mine and Dangerously Yours). Her story was always Dangerously Hers. Rasha is hers so it was fitting. However, Dangerously Mine was changed a few times. The original title was Taken: Eva, but since EC already had a book titled Taken I had to change it. After a few title tries, my editor and I settled on Dangerously Mine.
  1. Why did you pick this genre? What do you like about it?
I love watching and reading science fiction so it was an easy choice. I like that sci-fi allows me use my imagination and creativity to shape and build new and exciting worlds and characters. The only downfall about writing sci-fi is that you have to find a way to remember the world that you built. I have a very large Excel spreadsheet that I use to track everything I write. It comes in very handy when I want to remember the name of a planet or food or even a nickname that I’ve given someone.
  1. Since becoming a writer, what’s the most exciting thing to ever happen to you?
I can honestly say having a reader come up to me and tell me that they’ve read my stories. I think I’m more excited than they are when we meet!
  1. What book are you currently reading or what was the last book you read?
I just finished reading Ender’s Game. I've never read it before, so when the movie came out I decided that I wanted to read the book first before I saw the movie. It’s a wonderful book by the way.
  1. What is your writing process?
I don’t think I’ve developed it yet. I sit and try to write. Sometimes I get distracted by the television or the internet. Ask me that question in about 5 years (LOL).
  1. At a book signing, do you just sign your name or do you write a note? How do you come up with stuff to say? I write a little note, but I try to keep it as brief as possible. I’m so afraid that I’ll mess up the message so I opt for their name and mine and a thank you. Maybe when I become sure of myself I’ll write long nice notes, but until then, short or sweet.
  2. What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I’m a registered nurse by day. I think people would be surprised to find that out since I don’t write anything medically related.
  1. How do you react to a bad review?
Reviews, reviews, reviews. I think I react as anyone would in any situation, but I realize that not every book is for every person.
  1. How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
There was a lot of screaming and crying and laughing. I was so beside myself that I scared my daughter and dog. That first sale will forever be the greatest.

Book Tour: After Alex Died by Dakota Madison Week Blitz

After Alex Died - Week Blitz
Dakota Madison
New Adult Romance
Date Published: 11/28/2013

"Don't be someone who defines her life by someone else's death."

Dee Dee DeMarco's brother, Alex, was funny, free-spirited and creative. He was also gay. Tormented by bullies, Alex killed himself on his 15th birthday.

Two years later, and now in college, Dee Dee believes getting a summer job working with a college-prep program for disadvantaged high school students is a stroke of luck, until she discovers that the guy assigned to co-lead her group is Cameron Connelly, a star basketball player and one of the bullies who tormented her brother to death. How can Dee Dee possibly spend the entire summer working so closely with one of the boys she blames for her brother's death?

EXCERPT
I could feel my heartbeat quicken as I entered the auditorium. The kids were talking and messing around as they waited for the class to begin. The other counselors, with the exception of Cameron, were also seated in the audience with the kids. Cameron was standing at the podium with Dr. Jones.
When Cameron saw me walk in, he winked at me. I didn't know whether to slap him or hug him. Therein was the problem.
Dr. Jones waved her arms to get everyone's attention. "Quiet everyone. We have a special presentation today. Cameron is going to talk to you about bullying and how it impacted his life."
"Who would bully him?" one of the kids cracked and the other kids laughed.
"Enough," Dr. Jones reprimanded. "I expect you to give Cameron your attention and utmost respect."
Cameron took the podium. "Thank you, Dr. Jones. I'm here today to talk about bullying. Not because I was bullied when I was your age but because I was a bully. And it ruined my life."
When I looked out over the sea of faces, all eyes were trained on Cameron.
"I thought I had everything. I was one of the school's first string basketball players. We were all-state champions. I already had a full basketball scholarship to Penn State. I was popular. I had tons of friends. I could get a date with any girl in the school. And I lost it all."

Book Tour: The Merchant of Venice Beach by Celia Bonaduce Interview

celia-bonaduce.jpg
The Merchant of Venice Beach Cover.jpgDate Published: 8/1/2013
Contemporary Romance

The Rollicking Bun--Home of the Epic Scone--is the center of Suzanna Wolf's life. Part tea shop, part bookstore, part home, it's everything she's ever wanted right on the Venice Beach boardwalk, including partnership with her two best friends from high school, Eric and Fernando. But with thirty-three just around the corner, suddenly Suzanna wants something more--something strictly her own. Salsa lessons, especially with a gorgeous instructor, seem like a good start--a harmless secret, and just maybe the start of a fling. But before she knows it, Suzanna is learning steps she never imagined--and dancing her way into confusion

Interview:
  1. Where did you get the idea for the novel?
My sister-in-law- who is a very pragmatic paralegal - was taking dance lessons and it was something I always asked her about.  – After several years of dancing, her instructor up and left the dance studio without telling her. She felt so rejected, she went into therapy.  I was so astounded by this reaction that I thought, “I wonder how THAT happened?” – and then I made up a story that made sense to me.

  1. Your title. Who came up with it? Did you ever change your title?
I came up with the title “The Merchant of Venice, California” and my agent, Sharon Bowers, came up with “The Merchant of Venice Beach” – which is a WAY BETTER TITLE.  Actually, the very fist title was “Secretly Salsa” – but then I decided to go with all Shakespearean wordplays.

  1. Why did you pick this genre? What do you like about it?
That’s an interesting question.  Until Kensington Publishing picked up my books, I had no idea I had written a ‘romance trilogy” – I felt that I was writing romantic comedies, and saw myself more ad a “women’s fiction” writer.  I am very proud to stand alongside my romance writing sisters (and brothers) however.  I am delighted to have been invited to the party!

  1. Since becoming a writer, what’s the most exciting thing to ever happen to you?
Getting word out that you’ve written a book – or books – takes some imaginative thinking.  One approach I have taken is doing the TEA SHOP STOPS – book readings and signings at various tea shops around Southern California.  Hearing I had sold out the room and walking into that first decorated tea shop, with lovely cups, elegant tea pots and copies of “The Merchant of Venice Beach” on every table room made me want to cry, I was so happy.

  1. What book are you currently reading or what was the last book you read?
I am currently reading THE WOMEN OF ATOMIC CITY – the story of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, during WWII where thousands of young women worked in this “secret city” during the war years, usually in the dark about their duties.  It’s a non-fiction book, which I’m reading as a follow-up to Fannie Flagg’s THE ALL-GIRL FILLING STATION ‘S LAST REUNION, a fictionalized account of the WASPS – the women who served in the air force during WW11.

  1. What is your writing process?
I usually start working on the storyline in a fairly casual way.  I liken it to walking in a maze – you keep hitting dead ends, but finally you figure out where you need to go to get out!  I jot down notes, but I usually just think about where I want to go with the story while going about my regular life.  At some point, I will hit upon a story point that makes me so happy I can’t wait any longer and that’s when I sit down and the regulated process – that of sitting at the computer every day – starts!

  1. At a book signing, do you just sign your name or do you write a note? How do you come up with stuff to say?
At book signings, I l don’t ever sit at a table surrounded by a pile of books - sitting there and having people come to me seems a little grandiose.  I want everyone to know how grateful I am to THEM, so I usually go around the room after a reading and sign books at their tables.  Because we usually chat for a few minutes before I sign anything, I usually can come up with something personal to write.

  1. What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I’m actually a pretty good quilter, which, in this day and age, seems like a pretty random skill!

  1. How do you react to a bad review?
I’m not going to lie – bad reviews suck.  But I work in television production for a living and people in my profession get kicked to the curb with some regularity, so I am possibly more philosophical than most.   I try not to take bad reviews to heart – you are NEVER going to please everybody -  but the reviews that get to me are the ones where the review doesn’t like the book and then lays out the ENTIRE plot.  That seems mean-spirited to me.

  1. How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
I found out I sold my first book while at the downtown branch of the Los Angeles Library.  I was with my mother and my gent called to tell me the good news.  I burst into tears and tried to tell my mother what had happened, but since it was a library, I was trying to whisper. My mother had this alarmed look on her face – because I was crying.  When I finally managed to tell her that it was GOOD news, we went across the street to a bar and she bought us a round of champagne.

Book Tour: Soul Slam by Allie Burton Interview & Giveaway

BLURB:
A sixteen-year-old on her first heist to steal an ancient Egyptian amulet inadvertently receives the soul of King Tut…and the deadly curse that comes with it.

And Olivia is not alone at the museum.

A member of a secret Society, Xander believes it is his place to inherit King Tut’s soul and justly rule. He knows nothing about the society’s evil plan to control the world or the curse. Now, he must deal with the female imposter who stole the amulet.

Xander convinces Olivia they must form a temporary partnership. The two teens develop a connection, and together they must figure out how to end the curse before it turns deadly. On the run, unable to touch because of the curse, and dealing with a male soul inside her female body, Olivia must learn to trust Xander.

As the mystery surrounding the amulet unfolds, Olivia and Xander start to fall for each other. But is love enough to save them and the world from destruction?

EXCERPT:
Crawling ninja-style out of the sarcophagus, my black gym shoes hit the ground without a sound. But inside, a screech built up in my lungs and released on a heavy exhale, the scream so loud it sounded like an alarm. “Aiyeeeeee!”

Xander and the old man froze.

I lunged at the case, swooped in, and grabbed the amulet.

A jolt rocked my body. Pain rocketed up my spine, but I held tight to the prize. Clutching the piece in both hands, I hit the concrete floor like a football player making a catch, and kept rolling.

“A girl.” Xander’s surprised voice rose on a high note. “What the…Tut.”

“Grab her!” The old man spoke in English.

“Touch her?” Xander sounded horrified like I was the slime of the world. “I can’t.”

“She’s got the amulet.”

I tried to get to my feet, but the pulsing inside threw me off balance. I crashed back onto the floor. Pain seared my fingers and heat rushed my veins.

My body jerked. My head spun.

Something slammed into me from the inside, like it was in my body trying to get out. Back and forth I jerked. A powerful energy thumped from my ribcage to my stomach and back again.

I trembled from head to foot. My vision blurred. Images swam before my eyes—a blue river, golden statues, Egyptian pyramids, deceit, and death.

“What’s going on?” The sound coming out of my mouth warbled. “Am I dying?”

This felt worse than the time I had pneumonia with no medicine, or the time I broke my arm and Fitch duct taped it…

Fogginess seeped into my consciousness. If I blacked-out they’d steal the amulet, leave me to be caught, to go to prison, to face Fitch’s wrath.

Whatever was inside me ignited like a nuclear bomb. My skin could no longer contain my insides. I’d explode into tiny pieces and scatter across the museum floor.

“It’s happening… To. Her.” Jeb’s voice was faint as if coming from a distance, but I saw his shoes through squinted eyelids.

“But it’s my right. My inheritance.” Xander stomped his sandaled foot near my head. “My destiny.”

“It’s too late.” Jeb’s voice curled like a sneer with extra hatred. “The transfer has occurred. This stupid girl is now in possession of King Tutankhamun’s soul.”

INTERVIEW:
  1. What is your favorite quote and why? “All dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” Walt Disney. I have this saying on a plaque that sits on my desk. It’s the reason why I’ve done so many interesting things in my life.
  2. What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Heavenly Hash – its vanilla and chocolate ice cream with marshmallow swirls, chopped almonds, and dark chocolate chunks. And Phish Food, too!
  3. What are four things you can’t live without? Books, chocolate, gym shoes, and a heated steering wheel.
  4. What is your favorite television show? Revolution, Glee, and X Factor.
